My Personal Research Journey

My Personal Research Journey

The topic that I have chosen for the simulation is poverty.  I chose the topic of poverty because I have learned that poverty is not just being hungry but also lack of shelter, being sick and not being able to see a doctor because you have no insurance, not having access to school, not having a job, living one day at a time or living paycheck to paycheck, most of all poverty in a sense is being powerless.  As a teacher, I will do all that I can to ensure that my students get all the help they need as well as their families.  I feel that because low-income parents may often be overwhelmed by low self-esteem, a sense of powerlessness, and lack of hope for a change in the future, I will introduce ways that will help them to become empowered by first offering my assistance where needed.  We must find ways as a society to address rampant poverty or we may risk losing a generation.
The simulation process has allowed me to view my topic through various lenses.  This is an area that is in-depth and focuses on various populations, gender, ages and races.  Poverty does not discriminate.  Researching information on this topic will give me a wider vision as a professional how to take part in decreasing poverty with the help of my colleagues, friends, family, and administrators.
After constructing the research chart I realized that my research reading skills were not up to par.  I learned that even though I have used citations before, citing them in the correct format will be my biggest obstacle. This is an area that I have always had a problem with basically because there are so many different ways to cite them.  I will also focus on paraphrasing so as not to plagiarize unintentionally which can be easily done if not careful.  I look forward to learning from my colleagues any information that may help me with this process.  I will be more than happy to share resources as well as receive resources during this process.

  1. Kesha, I like your topic. Poverty is an issue so complex that there will never be enough research. My advise to you would be to chose a specific aspect and develop it as thoroughly as possible, remember that the smaller investigations sometimes contribute more than bigger ones (Naughton, Rolfe & Siraj-Blatchford, 2010).
Regarding your doubts about siting the references correctly, I advise you to keep your Essential Guide to APA Style handbook with at all times. At first it is confusing to learn the correct way to site each reference, but after a while it will come to you naturally, trust me!

    1. Hi Laure
Thank you for comments. I certainly agree with you, I also do not believe that there will be enough research on the issue of poverty. Poverty comes in so many forms and it is so sad that it seems to be increasing, regardless of the efforts that are being made to decrease it.

  2. Kesha, your topic choice is definitely one that is worthy of further research and development. However, I have to agree with Laure with respect to it being quite a broad topic choice with so many areas of focus. In spite of this, I'm sure that your future investigations will bring about some enlightening information that will be beneficial to the field of early childhood education. Simply remember to "refine the broad topic area of interest to you into a researchable question or questions." (Naughton, Rolfe & Siraj-Batchford, 2010).

    1. Hello "Tracey
Thank you for your comments. Poverty is definitely a broad and complex topic in which I hope to be able to touch on many specific ways that we as professional will be able to help our young children in order for them to lead productive and successful lives.

  3. Kesha,
Poverty affects so many people in this world and we really need to find a way to eradicate poverty in the US because our children are hurting. A great citation site is "Son of Citation" where you just have to input the information.

  4. Kesha,
Think that the topic of poverty is an excellent choice. With the current state of the economy and the jobless rates, I believe that it is important that we know more about this general topic. Also, educators need to know how to better serve the children that they care for by understanding the effects of poverty on young children. We have all read of the terrible impact that poverty has on early childhood. But I believe that you topic will allow you to have a more in-depth understanding and I am interested in hearing more about it in the weeks to come.
    Thanks for your comments,
    Amanda

    1. Hello Amanda
Thanks for your comments. Poverty should be one of the main issues that professionals should consider when working with young children from all backgrounds. I do not think that we will ever be able to rid poverty from the world but we can do our very best the help young children overcome it.
