DEMONSTRATION
OF COMPETENT COMMUNICATON
Competent communication is being able to choose a
communication behavior that is effective as well as appropriate for a given
situation. Basically it is the ability
to interact well with others. One of my
best friends, Samantha is a flight attendant.
She has to be able to interact well with the passengers, have a soft but
firm tone of voice because there is much that can be interpreted from someone’s
tone of voice, choose her words
carefully in regard to the choice of words she chooses because it shows how she
is perceived by the passengers on the plane.
Non-verbal communication is also important in this particular
context. Passengers look at how you
dress, how much eye contact you make, your body language and most of all your
facial expressions. Samantha has always
said that being able to communicate well is the basis of passenger
satisfaction. Yes, I would want to model
some of my own communication behaviors after my friend Samantha because it will
allow me not only to communicate well with others, but also interact well with
them.
Kesha,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post. I can only imagine that being a flight attendant would be comparable to an educator working in a diverse classroom. Trying to manage different cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs can be difficult without effective communication skills. Your example of using a soft yet firm tone is an important skill for those working with the public. The key is not to offend anyone; however, you have to persuade them to do certain tasks. Glad to be working with you again and continuing this journey.
Thanks for your comments,
Amanda

ReplyDeleteIt is very difficult being a flight attendant. Like teachers, they bear the responsibility of having to serve and interact with various cultural groups. I agree that they must speak in a soft but firm tone; but they must also exhibit body language that is congruent with their verbal communication. Working in any customer service field is always challenging because you must always present yourself in a manner that exudes positivity even when you're feeling low.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts,

Hi Kesha,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing your post. I never realized that flight attendants really need to have great communication skills because the job can be extremely stressful. Sometimes the airplane ride can get really bumpy with all of the turbulence but the flight attendant has to keep everyone calm in spite of the circumstances even if they are feeling a bit fearful also. I remember hearing about a male flight attendant that had lost it emotionally on a flight and started being rude to the passengers. So I applaud your friend Samantha for keeping her cool and exhibiting great communication skills.
This was a great post. Flight attendants have to be good communicators because of all the different types of people they meet. I recall my first airplane flight and how nice and friendly the attendant was. Thanks for sharing your ideas and thoughts.
